Consultation: Increasing fairness in the egg supply chain

News article

Views are sought on how the UK egg sector currently functions and how it can be improved

The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) is undertaking a UK-wide consultation with the aim of tackling contractual unfairness in the egg supply chain.

The chicken egg sector has faced significant challenges over the last few years, with the rising feed and energy costs and the Avian Influenza outbreak affecting supplies across the UK.

The consultation focuses on understanding:

  • how the UK egg sector currently functions
  • the nature of the relationships across the supply chain
  • whether the egg supply chain could be improved and how

Contributions from across the regions are invited and views are sought from egg producers, packers, processors, retailers and other stakeholders involved in the egg supply chain.

The Department for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) is encouraging Northern Ireland stakeholders to have their say and to highlight any specific issues or concerns for the local egg sector.

DAERA will work closely with officials in Defra, Scotland and Wales to consider the responses received and seek to ensure that the UK government’s proposed solutions to any issues identified take account of the differences between the egg supply chains across the regions.

Your responses to this consultation will help to design future policy aimed at promoting better business practice and making the supply chain fairer for all.

Give your views on contractual relationships in the UK egg industry.

The deadline for responses is 11:59pm on 22 December 2023.
