Crafts Council: Temporary Export Guide
The Crafts Council has published new guidance to help UK artists and arts organisations understand the rules on temporary export of goods
The guide is supported by the Department for Business and Trade and aimed at craft businesses, however, the information is relevant across other artforms.
This resource is packed with advice on the options available, so that you can find a route that works for you if you are, for example, attending trade shows or touring exhibitions.
This resource is intended for designer-makers looking to temporarily export their products, meaning they expect their goods to return to the UK. Products can be one-off items such as art collectables or items more suited to high-street or boutique stores.
The guide is full of vital information, top tips and advice on the following topics:
- shipping methods
- essential documents
- international considerations
- ATA Carnet
- other temporary export options
- research links
Exporting for the craft sector is complex, so the guide also contains case studies and makers' insights that offer insight into real-life experiences, both positive and challenging, when temporarily exporting.

It is recommended that you use this guide alongside the Crafts Council's existing resources on exporting, especially if you:
- are new to exporting
- have lost confidence in trading overseas
- are seeking advice on the international export of craft
Their International Toolkit contains a PDF guidebook and downloadable resources with simple checklists for overseas trade, as well as packing list and commercial invoice templates.
