Food Waste Action Week 2023

News article

This year, the UK's biggest annual food waste reduction campaign will run from 6 to 12 March with the theme: Win. Don't Bin.

Food waste is a massive cost issue for the hospitality and food service sector. An estimated £3.2 billion is lost every year, with an average of 18% of food purchased being thrown away.

As well as eating into the profits, wasted food is also taking a toll on the planet. One kilogram of wasted food typically produces three times its own weight in harmful greenhouse gases.

For these reasons and more, the annual Food Waste Action Week presents a great opportunity for businesses to get involved and take a stand against wasted food.

How to get involved

To make it easy for you to get involved, WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme) has produced a wide range of Food Waste Action Week 2023 campaign resources.

These resources include ready-to-go assets, such as images, banners and animations, toolkits containing suggested copy for social posts and press releases, as well as guidance you may need to help support the campaign.

The campaign toolkit also offers ideas for how you can get involved. For example, you can:

  • use the hashtag #FoodWasteActionWeek, like and share WRAP content on social media
  • create your own social content or use the assets supplied within the toolkit
  • launch your own press release using WRAP template
  • use WRAP assets in-store, in your offices or community hubs
  • run customer competitions on your social media channels or in-store
  • embed the Food Waste Action Week logo into your website

You can also:

  • tell customers and staff what actions you'll take to reduce food waste
  • support customers to make informed choices about the meals they buy

Finally, the partner pack urges you to engage your staff by visiting the Guardians of Grub website for tools and resources specifically designed to help you reduce food waste.
