Why Japan?

Japan, the world's third-largest economy, is a global leader in research and development (R&D) investment and corporate innovation. It is key partner for the UK, particularly in the semiconductor industry, where Japan's manufacturing capabilities complement the UK's strengths in design, intellectual property, and advanced materials.

The UK and Japan have developed strong collaborations in this sector, focusing on joint R&D in chip design, fabrication, advanced packaging, and materials. In 2023, the countries renewed their science and technology agreement with a Memorandum of Understanding to boost co-innovation in key technological areas, including semiconductors.

Japan's significant investment in its semiconductor sector, exceeding $36 billion, further underscores its growing commitment, particularly in areas like automotive, power semiconductors, sensors, and data centres.
