Principles for cyber incident communications

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has published new guidance on effective communications in a cyber incident to support organisations of any size to manage their communications strategy before, during and after the cyber incident.

The guidance outlines three core principles to follow:

  1. Prepare your communications strategy in advance.
  2. Communicate clearly with different parties, and tailor messaging where necessary.
  3. Manage the aftermath in the medium and long term.

Effective communication is vital for maintaining trust with staff, stakeholders, and the public during a cyber crisis. This guidance helps organisations manage both internal and external communications during an incident, ensuring effective responses that protect reputation and ongoing trust.
