New report on food standards in the UK

News article

The Food Standards Agency (FSA), in partnership with Food Standards Scotland, has published a comprehensive report of food standards in the UK

The report focuses on changes in food standards from 2019 to 2021. Specifically, it looks at standards across:

  • food and feed safety - including allergen management
  • consumer support and assurance - including provenance and authenticity, production standards, composition and nutritional content, labelling and advertising of food

In the report, the FSA has found that despite major upheaval caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the UK's departure from the EU and - more recently - the war in Ukraine, the UK's food standards have largely been maintained.

However, the report warns that significant challenges remain over the risk of:

  • reduced inspections of food businesses
  • controls on the import of food from the EU

This is the first in a series of reports the FSA plans to publish annually. Future reports may also consider broader production standards, such as specific issues related to animal welfare and the impact of production on the environment.
