UK Research and Innovation has announced a new £6 million programme to help the arts and culture sector explore the creative potential of immersive technology.

Funded through a grant from the XRtists scheme, the three-year Immersive Arts programme is expected to support over 200 UK-based artists and organisations by providing access to:

  • training
  • mentoring
  • specialist facilities
  • vital funds

£3.6 million in grant funding will be available to help turn creative ideas into reality.

The principal goal of the programme is to unlock innovation and support skills development by enabling artists and organisations to harness the creativity of immersive technology, including virtual, augmented and mixed reality.

The programme will be led by the University of the West of England, with hubs in:

  • Bristol
  • Belfast and Derry~Londonderry
  • Cardiff
  • Glasgow

In Northern Ireland, as one of the core partners of the programme, the Nerve Centre will work to generate inclusive and accessible opportunities, breaking down the barriers for artists of all backgrounds to engage with immersive tools.

The Arts Council of Northern Ireland has supported the project by co-funding the XRtists scheme, in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council, Arts Council England, Creative Scotland, and Arts Council of Wales.
